Language learning should happen while reading something you love
MangaLingo was created so you can learn a foreign language without it feeling like studying. Instead of memorizing word lists, you acquire the language naturally as you follow a story you're curious about.
The problem was this
Most people who start learning a language quit within the first few weeks. The reason isn't lack of ability—it's boredom. Apps make you memorize words out of context; textbooks teach sentences nobody says in real life. Both lead to the same place: what you learn doesn't stick, because you don't feel why you're learning it.
But when you're reading a story you're curious about, everything changes. You want to know what happens on the next page, and learning a word is no longer homework—it's the way to keep going. Manga is especially suited for this: the visuals carry the context, the dialogue is short, and it's close to everyday spoken language.
When you memorize a word, you know it. When you meet it in a story, you never forget it.
This simple observation was our starting point when we founded MangaLingo. Every feature on the platform is designed not to get in the way of reading.
How does it work?
In four steps, without breaking your reading flow.
Pick manga that fits your level
A placement test measures your vocabulary; we recommend chapters that are neither too easy nor incomprehensible.
Tap where you're stuck
Tap any word or sentence you don't understand, and the translation appears instantly. No need to open a dictionary and interrupt your reading.
Make what you learn stick
Words you add to your dictionary enter a spaced repetition system; they come back to you right when you're about to forget them.
See your progress
Track how many words you've learned, what level you've reached, and your series. When progress is visible, it's easier to keep going.
What do we care about?
The principles we turn to when making product decisions.
Reading is free
Reading manga and looking up translations for words you don't understand will never be paid. The first step of learning shouldn't sit behind a paywall.
Being transparent
We clearly state why content was removed or why a warning was given. Our decisions are reversible and can be appealed.
Respect for data
We don't sell your data for advertising. We collect only what's necessary to provide the service, and we spell out exactly what we collect and why in our privacy policy.
Community matters
Comments and chat are where learning stops being a solitary pursuit. Keeping this space safe for everyone is our priority.
So how do we stay afloat?
Reading and looking up translations will remain free. To cover server, storage, and AI costs, we offer a Premium subscription: automatic narration, word coloring, personal dictionary and review system, in-depth grammar analysis, end-of-chapter quizzes, and grammar lessons. In other words, what's paid isn't starting to learn—it's accelerating what you've learned.
We're at the beginning of the road
MangaLingo is still a growing project. Every feature we add is shaped by reader feedback. If you find something missing, confusing, or think it could be better, we'd love to hear it.
